From D16Z6 Crankshafts to Kryptonite Wheel Bearings: An NSK Quality Inspector’s Story

“Send us a quote for a d16z6 crankshaft, a kryptonite wheel bearing, and—while you’re at it—can you teach me how to change a spark plug on a lawn mower?”

That’s how the email started. I thought it was spam. It wasn’t.

I’ve been on the quality team at NSK’s automotive components division for over four years. I review about 200 unique part numbers a year. In Q1 2024, I rejected 6% of first deliveries because of dimensional, material, or packaging issues. I’m the person who says no when a part doesn’t meet spec. So this email made me pay attention.

Tolerance is one of those words I take personally. A flange on a wheel bearing might look flat to the naked eye, but check it against the print and it can be off by more than 0.03 mm. That’s enough to cause vibration, premature wear, or a warranty return. When I say “automotive-grade quality,” I mean we have the gauges to prove the part matches the print.

Backstory: The Email That Didn’t Fit Our Lane

The buyer wasn’t trying to be funny. He was tired of managing nineteen different suppliers and wanted one vendor to cover a list of parts. That list included a d16z6 crankshaft from a Honda engine, a kryptonite wheel bearing, and a request for lawn mower spark plug advice.

At first glance, that looks like a huge opportunity. Then you look closer.

After that, I created a simple RFQ triage checklist. Sales now asks four questions before anything gets my review:

  • What material family is this?

  • Do we have the measurement equipment to verify it?

The best quality control isn’t just about micrometers and CMM reports. It’s also about knowing what not to make.

I’d rather be the NSK supplier who says “this is our lane, and this is where you should go instead” than the one who nods and ships a disaster. That’s how you build trust in B2B auto parts. Simple.
