The hum that follows the car at speed, and deepens when you load the bearing through a turn, means the internal races are already losing material. By the time it registers in the cabin, metal is circulating inside that hub. Keep driving and the wheel develops play. On modern vehicles, the bearing isn't the only thing at risk—the hub unit also carries the sensor rotor that the ABS module reads. An NSK hub unit contains both the bearing and that sensor rotor in one sealed assembly. Kill the bearing, and you kill the ABS signal too.

Here's the thing about starter motors: the failure is usually in the solenoid contacts or the brushes. It's an electrical part, so most of the wear is invisible.
